Changes in the Type III VW over the
years
1962: Production began.
1963: 32 PHN-1
carburetor from here to date on all single carburetor engines; 200mm coil
spring clutch; special oil cooler which fits only the Type III; oil
deflector plate on rear drums. Discontinued; hose from oil breather to air
cleaner; ball joint front end.
1964: 1500-S with two
32 PDSIT carburetors introduced; engine cooling automatically con
trolled by a thermostat; grooved oil pressure relief valve.
1965: Wing nut on
clutch cable for easy adjusting; new steering gear box; heater is now
controlled by a lever.
1966: Disc brakes up
front; composite brake drums in the rear; 200mm diaphragm type clutch; Jo
new connecting rods (with nuts); fuel pump head modified.
1967: Rear equalizer
spring; 12 volt electrical system; bonded brake linings; twin circuit
master cylinder.
1968: Automatic
transmission and fuel injection made optional equipment; spring loaded oil
sump plate; safety steering column.
1969: Rear engine
carrier on all models; double jointed rear axles.
1970: Oil pressure
control valve added.
1971: Dual balance
pipes on twin carburetor engines; modified carbs.
1972: Larger disc
brakes; new steering wheel.
1973: Simplified
emission control system with a filter in the exhaust gas recycling system
and a solenoid to control flow. The vacuum spark advance cut-off has been
removed.
1974: No Type III
vehicles were manufactured in 1974.
